What The Hales:
The Hale telescope was the first major reflecting telescope built in the United States. It is also sometimes called the Great Refractor, named after John Herschel’s father, Sir William Herscher. The telescope saw its first light on October 18, 1868.
The Hale Telescope was designed by John A. Brashear and Andrew A. Common and built at the Allegheny Observatory in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It is a Cassegrain reflector with a mirror diameter of 42 inches (106 cm) and a focal length of 12 meters (39 ft). The telescope tube is made of steel and aluminum, while the mount is made of cast iron.
The Hale Telescope was used to discover numerous comets and asteroids, including the first known Apollo asteroid (1620 Fennia), the first known Amor asteroid (1977 Mary Lou), and the first known quasi-satellite of Earth (asteroid 3752 Cruithne).
While the primary mirror is no longer in use, it has been dehumidified and is still used for public viewing. The secondary mirror is still used and protected by a grill whose two panels open automatically before each viewing session.
New York City’s George Ellery Hale discovered asteroids such as 1627 Ivar, 3201 McKellar, 4179 Toutatis,[1] 54509 YORP, 60558 Echeclus (the first PHA found after Pluto), and over 250 other minor planets; he also co-discovered the periodic comet 104P/Kowal.
The Hale Telescope is undergoing active restoration by The Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh. A new mirror will be installed in the next few years.[2]
On September 28, 2007, it was reported that the telescope’s primary mirror needed to be recoated, and work began to take place during spring 2009. On June 30, 2010, two panels on the dome were blown off during a wind storm. No injuries or significant damage to equipment were reported. On July 3, 2013, a lightning strike caused extensive damage to the observatory, including the loss of the telescope’s central computer and significant damage to the dome.
