What is the cause of indigestion?

Indigestion is the discomforting symptoms such as heartburn, gas, and bloating. Indigestion can be due to a variety of reasons. A common cause of indigestion is gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD, in which acid produced by the stomach moves back up into the esophagus and causes pain and irritation.

When we eat, food goes from our mouth down through a tube called ‘food pipe’ (which some people call esophagus) into a sac-like structure at the bottom of our chest called ‘stomach.’

The lower end of the food pipe has two muscles that help move food down into the stomach. In some people, muscles do not work correctly, causing food to move back up through the food pipe and into the esophagus. This is known as reflux disease or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

There are many other causes of indigestion like infection in the stomach due to bacteria or parasites, tumors in the stomach or intestines, gallstones blocking the flow of bile from the liver into the small intestine, tumors in the pancreas that make digestive enzymes, etc.

There can also be issues with emptying of stomach contents after a meal, i.e., when partly digested food goes back to the esophagus, causing irritation and pain which people feel while eating or drinking or some time later on during the night. Indigestion can also be an early symptom of pancreatic cancer.

Other causes of indigestion may be related to problems with the nervous system, like diabetes mellitus, Parkinson’s disease, etc. Smoking can slow down peristalsis (muscle movements within our digestive tract) and cause undigested food particles to get stuck in the small intestine, causing irritation and pain.

Liver disease is also known to cause indigestion. People on certain medications or therapies or having some health conditions like thyroid disorder or anemia may also develop indigestion at times.
