Broad City Storyline
There is no overarching storyline in ‘Broad City,’ but the show does follow Ilana and Abbi as they try to “make it” in New York City. Abbi and Ilana’s escapades in their twenties are typically stoned and unproductive, and despite Abbi’s best efforts, she frequently finds herself swept up in Ilana’s slothful plots. The show’s strength, however, is in the way it depicts the lives of two young women as they attempt to find their place in New York City.
The first three seasons of the program are filled with this cheerfulness, perfectly depicting Abbi and Ilana’s carefree lifestyle. However, the fourth season takes a decidedly darker turn. This was reflected in the show’s location; whereas the first three seasons took place during the warm summer months, the fourth season moved to New York City in the dead of winter.
This was a huge turn of events for a show that had always flourished and relished its carefree youthfulness, but it was essential to the direction the show took in its last season. In its last season, “Broad City” did something that distinguished it from all previous comedies in the genre. Ilana and Abbi, in a surprising about-face, chose to start behaving like grownups and take life a little bit more seriously, as opposed to continuing in their carefree youthfulness full of pot-infused escapades, humor, and casual sex.
Abbi uproots her life at the conclusion of the program, abandoning her friends and family in favor of a new beginning in a different area of the country. Ilana, the more spontaneous and adventurous of the two, also decides to give up her weed-smoking lifestyle in favor of attending graduate school in pursuit of a career as a therapist. Abbi and Ilana’s mutual acceptance of one other’s choices to go on after abandoning their lavish lifestyles is the show’s shining moment.
