Black Cake Story
Black Cake, produced by Marissa Jo Cerar, Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Films, and Aaron Kaplans’ Kapital Entertainment, is a family drama/murder mystery based on Charmaine Wilkerson’s New York Times bestselling novel.
The film has an international cast and a multicultural setting. Setting the scene in Southern California, the plot travels to Rome, Scotland, England, and Jamaica. Cerar has been involved with the series for decades, both as writer of the adaptation and as showrunner.
Covey, a wife who ran away in the late 1960s, goes missing in the waves off the Jamaican coast, leading many to believe she is either a fugitive fleeing the death of her husband or has perished.
After Eleanor Bennett, a widow, dies of cancer fifty years later in California, she leaves behind a flash drive with untold tales of her voyage from the Caribbean to America, as well as her two estranged children, Byron and Benny. Eleanor tells her children tales that make them question their family history and their assumptions about it.

Black Cake Trailer
Hulu debuted the Black Cake teaser on October 2, 2023, giving viewers a taste of the suspenseful family drama to come. Benny Bennett (Adrienne Warren) and Byron Bennett (Ashley Thomas), Eleanor’s estranged children, gather in an office to hear their mother’s will read aloud.
Despite sharing a blood relative, it’s clear that this isn’t a happy connection between the two. A single flash drive with their mother’s darkest secret—”Eleanor is not my real name”—was left to them by Eleanor, something no one had anticipated when they listened to her will.
The remainder of the clip delves into Eleanor’s secret history, which spans many nations and decades. She was compelled to enter into an arranged marriage at the tender age of sixteen in order to settle her father’s debt, as revealed in a sequence of flashbacks; her actual name is Covey. Covey murders her husband in a desperate attempt to escape a loveless marriage. Covey begins her harrowing trek to freedom when, with her life under danger, she flees her community.
