Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Season 5: Is It Renewed Or Canceled?

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was developed by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock for streaming on Netflix. On March 6, 2015, the first season of the comedy-drama was made available on Netflix. Kimmy, the protagonist, is a young girl in Durnsville, Indiana, who is in danger of being taken over by a cult unless someone can save her. She spent 15 years in the Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne’s underground bunker with three other women. After its premiere, the sitcom quickly gained popularity and was nominated for 18 Primetime Emmys.

Now that the main character’s journey has been elegantly concluded in the show’s first four seasons, fans are left wondering: Will there be an “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” Season 5? Okay, then, let’s find out.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Season 5 Renewal Status

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s cancellation was announced in May 2018, not long before the first part of season 4 on Netflix. If the initial claim is to be believed, the show was discontinued not against the desire of its creators, but rather because “everyone felt it was time to end the series.” Netflix has been cutting series as it works to increase its original content. The majority of the streaming service’s original shows including Bloodline, Marco Polo, and House of Cards have all concluded their runs.

Since Netflix is notoriously secretive about its viewership numbers, we will never know how Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s ratings changed over the show’s four seasons or if a decline in interest was a factor in the cancellation. A movie adaptation of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt may be produced in place of Season 5 instead.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Plot

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is based on an 8th-grade student named Kimmy Schmidt, whom Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne kidnapped. Richard took Kimmy and three more women hostage for fifteen years. He placed the four in an underground dugout and told them of a nuclear apocalypse to keep them in the bunker.

Reverend Richard told Schmidt and the women that they were the only people left on Earth after the nuclear disaster. In season one, the hostages are saved and appear on the Today Show in New York City. However, Schmidt doesn’t want to return to Indiana and be seen as a victim.

She decides to remain in New York and begin a life in the city. Kimmy secures a job as a nanny for Jacqueline Voorhees’s son. Additionally, Schmidt is in love with Dong, a Vietnamese man from her G.E.D. class. Furthermore, she goes ahead to be a witness against Reverend Richard and learns how things have changed after her 15 years of captivity.

Will there be a spin-off series or movie?

Yes. The producers have discussed releasing a film. In an interview, co-creator Carlock said:

“We now have a shorter runway than we originally thought we would and don’t want to overstuff it and rush it,” he says. “And there are things that I think would be fun to hold off for kind of a big epic finale in feature form.”

“As to whether the movie would just be for Netflix or have a theatrical release, Carlock says, “I don’t know. That’s a good question. I think it’s probably just for the platform. Sometimes they do both, but I don’t know if we’ve gotten down to crossing those T’s just yet.”
