Seven Seconds Storyline
In Seven Seconds, the perpetrator of the crime is immediately apparent. Jersey City police officer Pete Jablonski crashes his car while driving through a recreation center on the way to the hospital to meet his expecting wife. Alternatively, someone may be riding a bike during the day on their day off, leaving a trail of blood in their wake.
Mike DiAngelo, sergeant of Pete’s opiates unit, tracks down the suspect, a black high school student, after Pete’s call, completely shocked. DiAngelo thinks they need to keep quiet about it, or else Pete will be murdered as punishment for “Ferguson, Chicago, Baltimore — each white cop who at any point slaughtered a black kid.” In a nutshell, the kid is in a coma. There is no dialogue, only brief glimpses of him riding his bike for the last time.
But his name, Brenton Butler, is constantly brought up, hovering above the story like that of Tamir Rice and Freddie Gray, two other names that have become totems and rallying cries. The real question in Seven Seconds is whether or not Brenton will be given justice. What might his idea of justice look like? How many people’s lives are going to crumble once Brenton opens his eyes? Although the show’s premise is interesting, it never quite lives up to its potential because of subpar execution.

Seven Seconds Season 1 Review
The story is engaging, and the show improves by offering other points of view on the same incident, from the corrupt policemen to the victim’s family to the prosecution seeking justice for the family. Each of the ten hours’ worth of characters has a full adventure, complete with an arc and a distinct personality. Despite its length, Seven Seconds’ ending is a bit too hasty, leaving viewers to mull over the film’s last moments.
Seven Seconds follows the recent pattern of Netflix shows feeling excessively drawn out; with some episodes clocking in at over an hour, there’s a lot to wade through before you get to the good stuff in the final three episodes. Here, the show picks up the pace from its deliberate slowness and becomes an intense, dramatic courtroom drama.
Seven Seconds does an excellent job conveying its deep, meaningful themes. The maturity with which Seven Seconds handles questions of racial inequity, honor, justice, and the inequalities in the treatment of blacks and whites allows it to tell its story without bias. The show’s final moments, which have a bittersweet quality and leave the viewer with a pause for thought, are a magnificent illustration of this. Seven Seconds also looks great and is unlike any other program out there. This series is undeniably creative, with its lack of opening titles and its gorgeous aerial background shots.
