One of the most successful series of popcorn movies in Hollywood history is The Meg, based on the books by Steve Alten of the same name. Fans of the movie have been reeled in by Warner Bros. ever since 2018’s “Jason Statham vs. the Giant Shark,” which introduced the actor to the genre.
With the release of the sequel to one of the finest shark movies of all time, audiences everywhere are wondering whether a new aquatic monster world is in the works. Meg 2: The Trench wasn’t as entertaining as the first film (for more on that, check out our review of Meg 2), but it did serve to remind us of one important fact: enormous monsters are awesome, and the more of them, the better. Therefore, The Digital Fix has gone into the deep end to provide you with all the details you need on a possible sequel, just as any good film fan would. We’ve laid down all you need to know about Meg 3, including when it’ll be available and who’ll be in it.
Meg 3 Renewal Status
We don’t know whether Meg 3 will happen or not right now. First of all, Steve Alten is responsible for the books upon which both The Meg and Meg 2: The Trench is based; he has authored a total of six. The source material for adaptations is abundant.
Second, it is performance-based. With over $530 million in worldwide ticket sales, the original film was an overwhelming financial success and immediately paved the path for a sequel. A third installment might be greenlit as early as 2023 if it earns as much as the previous two films.
Meg 3 Release Date
Since Warner Bros. has not officially announced Meg 3, it should come as no surprise that there is currently no set release date. After the premiere of August 2018’s The Meg, audiences had to wait five years until August 2023’s Meg 2: The Trench. A third film is unlikely to take as long to produce, but the current strikes by screenwriters and performers might delay production.
As a result, it’s unlikely that any work will be done on Meg 3 until the strikes are ended, which might be as late as 2024. Even if it’s verified, we probably won’t get to see it until August 2025 at the earliest.
Meg 3 Cast
It’s reasonable to assume that Jason Statham, who played Jonas Taylor in the previous two movies, as well as his friends Page Kennedy, who played DJ, and Cliff Curtis, who played James “Mac” Mackreides, will return for Meg 3.

Meg 2 Ending
After discovering it, Jonas and the team at the Oceanic Institute have been caring for a meme they’ve named Haiqi. Unfortunately, as Jonas and the others are investigating the trench, Haiqi escapes from the facility after behaving abnormally due to her being in heat. In the trench, Jonas faces up against Montes, who has been ordered by the shady investor in the institution, Driscoli, to eliminate Jonas so that she may carry on her illicit mining of the ocean bottom for valuable minerals.
To sum up, Montes’s activities cause a breach in the thermocline layer, allowing three Megs, including Haiqi, to reach the surface, swim to Fun Island, and begin consuming anybody they encounter. One of the other Megs chomps down on Montes before Jonas kills it. All of Driscoli’s goons meet their end, including Driscoli himself, who is murdered by dinosaurs released from the trench.
Although Haiqi seems to be poised to murder Jonas and the institute’s director, Jiuming, their training with the Meg kicks in, and he eventually leaves them alone and swims out into the deeper water. In the closing scene, it is said that Haiqi is “still out there” and might be pregnant, therefore she and her prospective child could make an appearance in the third film.
Meg 3 Plot
Meg 2: The Trench takes its name from the opportunity to go across the Marianas Trench. After seeing a huge octopus rise from the thermocline in Meg 2, the thought of exploring the world underneath it is exciting. However, the realm beneath the thermocline is not yet thoroughly explored. Meg 3 will have a lot to work with narratively, what with Haiqi still being alive and more Megalodons on the way.

Since a new movie hasn’t yet been announced, much alone concluded production, gigantic shark aficionados, we’re sorry to say that there is currently no trailer for Meg 3.
