Benefits of Elderflower and Tea Benefits
The elderflower enjoys a long and rich history of medicinal use. It has been used to treat fever, diarrhea, and allergies. Generally, it is thought that the flowers provide more benefits than the berries or leaves.
[1] The flowers appear in early spring and are commonly used in juices, jams, and wines (in Europe).
[2]Today, the flowers are most often used to treat upper respiratory tract infections, feverish conditions, and hayfever.
[3] Some people swear by drinking elderflower tea to alleviate allergy symptoms including runny nose and itchy, watery eyes.
The flowers contain a number of compounds that have proven antimicrobial activity against bacteria and viruses.
[4] It is thought that elderflower is effective because it contains many different compounds, rather than just one particular compound that provides all of the effects observed. One study found that elderflower was more effective against bacteria than echinacea, a popular herbal remedy for cold and flu symptoms.
[5]Most of the human studies on elderflower have been conducted with an eye towards the treatment of symptoms associated with upper respiratory tract infections, such as hayfever (seasonal allergic rhinitis).
The studies found that the preparation of elderflowers used in the studies helped alleviate allergy symptoms associated with hayfever. For example, one study gave individuals aged 18-64 either a placebo capsule or 100 ml of elderflower syrup four times daily for 5 days during the hayfever season.
[6] The researchers found that those taking the elderflower syrup had less nasal congestion, redness due to swelling, and tearing/watering eyes compared to those who received the placebo.
Another study gave individuals aged 18-65 suffering from hayfever either a placebo or 2.5 ml of elderflower syrup three times daily for 5 days during the hayfever season.
[7] Those who received the elderflower syrup had significantly less nasal congestion and other allergy symptoms compared to those who received the placebo.
Some studies have also found that preparations made from elderflowers are capable of inhibiting the growth of bacteria that often infect the upper respiratory tract.
[8] Elderflower is also used to treat fever, diarrhea, and stomach aches in children.
[9] There is some evidence that compounds found in elderflowers have anti-inflammatory properties.
[10]Research has found that elderflower can inhibit enzymes that are involved in triggering blood vessel inflammation. This provides a possible explanation for how elderflower might help treat fever associated with the flu or common cold since the flu and common cold are often accompanied by pain, swelling, redness, and/or fever due to inflammation of the blood vessels near the nose.
Elderflower is also thought to help lower blood pressure.
[11] This may be due to its ability to inhibit enzymes that are involved in triggering inflammation since it has been found that high blood pressure can sometimes be brought on by chronic inflammation.
While elderflower appears beneficial for the treatment of upper respiratory tract infections and feverish conditions, there currently isn’t much evidence that it is useful for treating stomach aches in children, diarrhea, or other conditions. The safety of elderflower during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established.
What is Elderflower:
Elderflower (often known as Elder or Elderberry) is a plant that produces creamy-white flowers which are used for a variety of culinary and non-culinary purposes, especially wines and cordials. The flower has been described as having a clove-like scent.
In the wild, it is from Europe to Asia and also in America.
In addition to being made into wine, elderflower cordial has been produced from the flowers of European Elder by steeping them in boiling water and sugar or honey. It can be used to make fritters and is the main ingredient in Saint Germain liqueur; it is also popularly combined with gin to make a cocktail in the summer months.
In France, the syrup is made from flowers and used as a base for sorbet, sherbet, and liqueur. In Italy, it is used as tea or mixed with lemonade. In Germany, a non-alcoholic elderflower punch based on grape juice is common.
In the Netherlands and Belgium, it is used to produce “Bessenjenever”, a gin-like spirit that also contains sugar and lemon. In Sweden, the infusion of elderflower is known as “Sommarlund” and is consumed as both cordial and syrup mixed with water.
In Britain, Elderflower cordial often seen on supermarket shelves during the spring months is commonly consumed mixed with sparkling water to make an Elderflower Pressé.
How to grow them:
Elderberry bushes are quite easy to maintain and grow. If you are an avid gardener, just plant the seeds in the ground close together, water them regularly for at least 1-2 months until they have grown nice strong saplings.
If you are not an expert but still want your own elderflower bushes then it is recommended that you buy a plant or two, they are not very expensive and you can expect a decent harvest of flowers within a year or two.

Stimulates blood flow in the skin by removing toxins beneath the surface of the skin, thereby making the skin look healthier and younger by removing dead skin cells.
It is anti-inflammatory, thus preventing redness and irritation of the skin caused by sun exposure or acne.
Prevents wrinkles because it tightens pores which contribute to that effect. It also reduces fine lines on the face caused by reactions with free radicals in the air.
Balance sebum production, giving the skin a healthy sheen.
It helps reduce sunburn by strengthening the capillary walls in the face and hands because it cleanses them of toxins so there is less juice for free radicals to react with. This prevents wrinkles caused by sun exposure over time.
