A lot of hype around the launch of the first season of Our Kind of People in September (and the fact that a slap was edited out of the pilot didn’t hurt the buzz), and the show was able to snag big names like Yaya DaCosta (Chicago Med) and Morris Chestnut (The Resident) for starring parts. Despite this, the show’s ratings weren’t great, and a second season wasn’t certain. Now that the first season is over, fans want to know whether Our Kind of People will be back for a second.
Our Kind of People Season 2 Renewal Status
The cancellation of Our Kind of People Season 2 by the Fox network was announced on May 13, 2022. Many Fox original series have been stated to be canceled, so even if the show had a large fanbase who had been eager to see more seasons of these shows so that they could have a good ending storyline that these beloved characters truly deserved, the show has no chance of being renewed by the network.
However, in the early months of 2022, numerous networks made the decision to no longer renew a large number of TV programs. Even if the program had the potential to improve after refining the narrative and character arcs, Our Kind of People has joined the ranks of similarly terminated shows.

Our Kind of People Season 1 Recap
The protagonist of “Our Kind of People” is Angela Vaughn, a strong-willed single mother who sets out to restore her family’s honor by creating a revolutionary haircare product that honors black women’s intrinsic, natural beauty. However, she learns something about her mother’s past that will permanently shake up the community and turn her life upside down. The show is both an unapologetic celebration of black perseverance and success and a soapy, exciting examination of race and class in contemporary America.
Oak Bluffs, a little town on Martha’s Vineyard, a famous Massachusetts island that has become a world-class vacation area, has been home to black members of the super-elite for decades. In the dramatized, theatrical world of Our Kind of People, Oak Bluffs is transformed into a place where money, connections, and status are paramount, and one lady seeks to claim what is rightly hers.
There have been whispers for years that Fox had been working on turning the book into a TV show. After spending six years investigating some of America’s most prominent black families, Graham released his book in 1999. In 2017, the network allegedly organized a writer’s room to hammer out a screenplay for the book. In 2020, a new team of writers got together, and FOX greenlit the project without requiring a pilot.
Why did Fox cancel Our Kind of People Season 2?
Season one of Dupont, starring Nadine Ellis, concluded in January. According to Deadline, some of the episodes starring Ellis were taped in December. Gist claimed to Deadline that she would have lived through a firefight with an assassin who was after her father, Teddy Franklin if the show had been continued.
You always have to give families something to root for and a reason to come back, and that’s what I love about it,” she added. By the conclusion of the season, everyone in the family has gone crazy with Teddy. In the future, Leah’s injuries will ideally serve as a rallying point for the family.
The TV Series Finale gives additional context for the cancellation, explaining that Our Kind of People only garnered a 0.30 rating among adults aged 18–49 and 1.35 million viewers in its first season of live+same-day ratings (which includes DVR playback through 3:00 AM). These numbers aren’t perfect, particularly when compared to other programs on the same channel, but they give you a fair idea of how well a show is performing overall.
Our Kind of People Season 2 Release Date
Fox has not yet revealed whether or not they will be renewing Our Kind of People for a second season. It’s difficult to say whether or not the program will be brought back for another season given the lack of good feedback it received. If the show is picked up for a second season, it would likely premiere in the autumn.
