Orphan Black Story
Sarah Manning, a British con artist living in Toronto, is introduced in the pilot episode when she witnesses the suicide of a lady named Beth Childs who looks just like her. After Beth’s death, Sarah takes on her identity and job (as a police investigator). In the third episode of the first season, Sarah learns that she is a clone, that she is one of many “sister” clones dispersed all through North America and Europe as part of an illegal human cloning project, and that she and her “sisters” are the targets of a murder plot.
Alison Hendrix and Cosima Niehaus, two other clones, and Sarah’s foster brother, Felix Dawkins, uncover the scientific movement known as Neolution as the source of the clones. The proponents of this theory argue that humanity may steer its own development with the use of scientific knowledge.
The Dyad Institute, a huge, important, and affluent biotech firm reportedly led by Dr. Aldous Leekie, serves as the movement’s institutional backbone. Clone Rachel Duncan helps the Dyad Institute with their eugenics program, fundamental research, and lobbying of governmental institutions. In addition to exploiting the clones for their technology, the organization has embedded “monitors” into the clones’ daily lives, ostensibly for scientific research but in reality to keep tabs on them.
Attempts to regulate the birth of sentient beings serve as a central plot point in a number of works. Another important idea is on the political machinations between Mrs. S., Sarah’s foster mother, the Dyad Group, and the Proletheans, as well as the writers of Project Leda (a reference to the Greek story of Leda and the Swan). The struggle to regulate the birth of new humans touches on both issues. Sarah grows as a result of her challenges and fights to protect the parent-child relationship against the Neolutionists and Proletheans.
