Benefits of Bone Marrow

Bone marrow is the soft tissue found in large bones like those in arms and legs.- A bone marrow transplant replaces diseased or destroyed cells with healthy donor cells. – Bone marrow contains immature cells known as stem cells.

Stem cells are capable of turning into different cell types. – They can be used to treat many disorders like blood, immune system, and metabolic diseases.- Some disorders like anemia (low number of red blood cells) can be treated by transfusion of healthy blood stem cells.

In the case of leukemia, high numbers of abnormal white blood cells develop in the bone marrow and interfere with its function. The treatment for this is a bone marrow transplantation where the diseased bone marrow is replaced with healthy bone marrow from a donor. This is often not taken from the same person because sometimes it may contain cancerous or pre-cancerous cells.

The stem cells from the donor are injected through a vein in an infusion or “transplant.”- This process is done under general anesthesia and may take several hours or up to a week.- A transfusion of blood products and sometimes total body irradiation (TBI) also may be required.

Blood stem cells can grow into other blood cell types, such as red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. These new cells can replace those destroyed by disease or even become healthy bone marrow. This limits the harmful effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy on other normal tissues, which could otherwise cause serious side effects.

Dangers of eating bone marrow:

1. Overeating bone marrow can cause you to suffer from protein poisoning.   That’s right!  You will be forced to sleep for 24 hours if you eat more than the recommended amount of protein every day. Almost all types of meat, including fish and meat, contain a high level of protein – an average of about 16 percent.

Bone marrow contains up to 38% protein – almost twice as much as muscle and fish tissue and four times more than vegetables and fruit on average! If this is what you overeat, your body cannot produce an enzyme that breaks down nitrogen compounds in your blood known as urea stored in the kidneys.

2. Bone marrow is very high in cholesterol, clogs your arteries, and causes heart disease. Over time, a diet high in fatty bone marrow can lead to arteriosclerosis and cardiovascular problems. While the average steak contains 167 mg of cholesterol, a 100 g piece of bone marrow has 2200 mg!

3. You can get sick from bacteria contained in bone marrow, such as Vibrio parahaemolyticus, which causes diarrhea.   In addition to managing nearly two-thirds the daily recommended intake of zinc, a 100 g bar contained up to 620 calories and over 2000 mg of sodium, but only 193 mg potassium – all nutrients that contribute to hypertension.

According to a study published by researchers at Ohio State University Medical Center, it is shown that individuals who eat more than 3 oz of tuna or other fish high in mercury are at risk of developing heart disease.

4. Bone marrow has a lot of protein, but not all protein is digestible.  For example, you can not get rid of collagen fibers in the bone marrow, which are indigestible, leading to constipation. Collagen is the most abundant type of protein in the body and consists mainly of the fibrous connective tissue between muscles and bones.

If your diet contains too many collagen-rich foods instead of lean meat like chicken breast, you may be susceptible to kidney stones or arthritis due to dehydration and lack of Calcium in your diet.

How to eat bone marrow:

1. If you eat the bone marrow along with meat, it becomes easier to digest because it’s already been broken down by heat from cooking.

2. Avoid cutting through the middle of the long bone as much as possible if you want to enjoy a nice medium-rare steak or roast dinner.  The second option is less likely to contain splinters that can lodge in your throat and cause choking.

3. Always try to buy organic beef, which has been raised humanely and fed a natural diet without growth hormones to reduce the nutritional benefits of bone marrow compared with non-organic beef.   You should also check out local farmers’ markets for cheaper options which are often healthier than supermarket steak.

4 And don’t forget that beef is not the only source of bone marrow.  You can enjoy it in soups, stews, pâté, pasta sauces, and stocks.  Some people even like to eat it raw on bread, although contamination is very high.

Eating bone marrow pros and cons:

PROS:

There’s no denying that bone marrow has a lot of benefits.  It’s delicious, and it serves as a good source of protein, Calcium, and zinc – which is essential for protecting your eyesight.   You can use it to add various kinds of meat or even supplement it with wheat germ oil if you need more iron in your diet.  If you have a large amount of excess fat in your body, eating bone marrow can help burn some off due to its richness in saturated fats.

CONS:

1. Although the fat content is about 50%, 5g contains less than 200 calories per serving, making this food low in calories compared with other types of meats such as pork chops that have more than 300 calories.  If you have a very high level of cholesterol or heart disease, it’s best not to eat bone marrow because it contains too much cholesterol – one slice of roast beef can create an entire day’s worth of cholesterol in your body.

2. Because its high-fat content can clog your arteries, it’s best to cook the bone marrow instead of eating it raw. Cooking also breaks down the tough collagen fibers that cannot be digested by humans and lead to constipation.

3. If you tend to have bad stomach aches, refrain from taking too much bone marrow due to its salty nature, which can cause cramps in some people.

4. A large amount of bone marrow is made up of Calcium, so if you don’t eat a lot of greens or take calcium supplements, you may run a risk of becoming deficient in Calcium, which could result in osteoporosis as you age since this comes from beneath the bones themselves until they are depleted.

4. Always try to buy organic beef, which has been raised humanely and fed a natural diet without growth hormones to reduce the nutritional benefits of bone marrow compared with non-organic meat.   You should also check out local farmers’ markets for cheaper options which are often healthier than supermarket steak.

How to improve bone marrow naturally:

1. You can also add a teaspoon of wheat germ oil to your bone marrow each day to increase the amount of iron in your body since it has a high level of natural Vitamin E and various essential minerals such as Calcium.  However, consider that too much Vitamin A could put you at risk of severe diseases, so avoid overdosing on this supplement, especially when starting with it.

2. If you’re unable to buy organic beef due to financial constraints, don’t worry because there are many other options available for you besides just sticking with chicken breast or tuna every day without added nutrients from bone marrow.

It’s best not to eat any meat more than three times per week because of the adverse health effects caused by overeating meat daily, so try to eat beef or pork on Sundays and Wednesdays instead.  I also recommend trying other types of seafood such as oysters, clams, lobsters, crabs, etc., which are all rich in calcium carbonate that can strengthen your bones and teeth.

3. If you know how to make bone broth from scratch, then you’ll save yourself a lot of money over time since it’s far less expensive than buying premade stocks at the store (which can contain MSG and other harmful ingredients).  You can even make your bread using wheat germ oil if you want more Vitamin E – be sure not to take too much Vitamin A because its toxicity level is around 25,000 IU per day.

4. You can also sprinkle some bone meal into your daily diet since it’s incredibly high in calcium carbonate compared with raw beef bones which have about 60% of the RDA for Calcium, while bone meal powder contains 88%.

Some people may even choose to supplement with Vitamin K2 if they want to increase their intake of this vital vitamin that helps build strong bones and teeth without causing too much calcification inside their arteries – this is especially important if you already have osteoporosis to prevent making things worse like many doctors recommend women do by giving them Fosamax instead of fixing their diets.
