Prison Break Season 6: Will It Ever Happen?

The 2005 Fox series “Prison Break” was an instant hit with reviewers and audiences alike for its story of a man who hatches a plan to free his brother from prison a month before his execution for the murder of the brother of the United States vice president. Michael Burrows (Wentworth Miller), a structural engineer, and his brother Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell), a career criminal, spent five seasons working together to clear Lincoln’s name and evade The Company, a shadow organization commanded by powerful politicians.

Season 2 picks up after the brothers have escaped from jail and are on the run. In Season 3, Lincoln had to release Michael from jail in Panama, while Michael had to free Lincoln. In the fourth and final season, the brothers became further involved with The Company when they were given the mission of gathering information from inside the company. In 2017, eight years after the series’ last episode aired on Fox, the show was revived for a nine-episode fifth season, surprising fans who thought they had witnessed the last of the characters for good.

Prison Break Season 6 Renewal Status

There was once intended to be a Prison Break season 6 despite the failures of seasons 4 and 5. However, Fox eventually lost interest in the project, and those plans fell through. Wentworth Miller, who portrays Michael Scofield, one of the show’s major protagonists, ruled himself out of returning for a sixth season because he did not want to continue portraying straight characters.

The show’s popularity is shown by the fact that, despite being canceled twice, Prison Break nearly reappeared for a sixth season. Fox must have thought, at least temporarily, that the Prison Break series still had financial potential. Despite its initial popularity, Prison Break’s viewership had clearly declined over time, and the program had almost no hope of regaining viewers without Wentworth Miller in the lead role of Michael Scofield.

What will happen in Prison Break season 6?

Without any information on what Michael and Lincoln’s future holds, viewers of Prison Break can only guess what the sixth season could bring. Michael was granted amnesty for his crimes in the most recent season, enabling him to finally settle down with Sara and their kid. For the next season, he will be sucked back into his perilous past, where both familiar and unfamiliar foes will be waiting for him.

Is it possible the show could return someday?

For 2019, Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier said (via Newsweek): “There’s no plan right now to revive Prison Break or any of the other franchises, but when the creators come with a story that they think is the right time to tell, we are so ready to listen because those are some franchises of which I’m so proud and feel so fortunate that they’re in our stable.” So, even if primary performers Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell have said they would never return to “Prison Break,” there is still a potential that the show may be revived, perhaps with new characters or an outright remake.

Michael Thorn, president of Fox Entertainment, was questioned about a possible season renewal in 2020. “We continue to talk about ’24’ and ‘Prison Break’ as potential spinoffs,” Thorn told Deadline. Nothing is ready to be announced on either front, but whatever it is, it has to seem like more than simply another season to be worth doing.

Purcell posted a flashback photo of the cast in January 2022 with the message, “It’s all I get on Instagram. Breaking out of jail, breaking out of jail, breaking out of jail” Later, he continued, “As for 6? It’s still spoken about in the halls of @foxtv and @disney. They filmed it in a studio. My first impression was, and still is, a positive one. I have a close relationship with Wentworth. Conversation ensues. Facts of life” Thus, maybe another resurgence is still possible in the future. However, at this time there are no preparations being made.
