The action-comedy series American Born Chinese is unlike any other show on Disney Plus, but is there going to be a second season? Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel American Born Chinese serves as inspiration for the film adaptation, which centers on high school student Ben Wang’s unexpected involvement in a war between legendary Chinese deities. Season 1 of American Born Chinese stands out for its exceptional cast and fresh take on coming-of-age themes like identity and bullying. There are clear connections to the source graphic novel, yet the show also stands on its own.
The series, which is one of Disney Plus’s most diversified offerings, is a coming-of-age story that also features action comedy, reflecting author Yang’s own search for identity as a Chinese American. The first season features Oscar winners Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan, but the show’s strengths go far beyond the strength of its A-list cast. One of the most-anticipated new series of 2023, American Born Chinese, lived up to the hype and was widely praised by critics (at least according to Rotten Tomatoes). All of this achievement paves the way for a second season of American Born Chinese.
American Born Chinese Season 2 Renewal Status
Neither the creators nor Disney have made any announcements on the show’s future. A second season of American Born Chinese is not currently in production. Fans should not worry; it has been just a few days since the premiere episode aired. There are also accusations that Disney is waiting too long to reveal its plans for the drama series. American Born Chinese could continue for several more seasons even if the tale reaches the climax of the graphic novel. That means the writers are expected to have the next plot mapped out!
However, a favorable critical reaction might be used as a positive indicator when planning for a revival. Furthermore, the last battle has not yet been decided. Therefore, it’s likely that the action drama will be back for another season. Yeo Yann Yann, when addressing the sequel, has dropped hints about a third installment. She portrayed Christine and commented that the story might be developed further. To that end, Daniel Wu, who played the Monkey King, has hinted at the possibility of a second season and its plot. Now we just have to sit tight until the network conducts a deeper dive into the ratings and other data.
American Born Chinese Season 2 Release Date
Disney+ has not announced whether or not there will be a season two renewal. Since the first season premiered on May 24th, we don’t expect there to be any further updates for quite some time. A second season premiere before the spring of 2024 is highly unlikely.

American Born Chinese Season 2 Plotline
The climax of the fans’ excitement occurred in the most recent episodes. Guanyin sent Jin a message warning him of the Bull Demon’s impending plot. He had to deal with the crisis, which threatened the whole fabric of the universe. Jin needed Anuj’s assistance in finding Wei-Chen to halt the onslaught. They unexpectedly found him in his natural monkey shape. After some time, Jin and the rest of his crew saw that Demon’s tactics were remarkably similar to those depicted in Jin’s comic. So, they planned to use the staff’s enchantment to counteract Bull’s plans.
Simon and Christine, on the other hand, were seeking the pendant with all their might. Sun Wukong was found by the two during their quest, and he has successfully integrated into their group afterward. Meanwhile, Jin ran into Amelia and they exchanged passionate declarations of love. It wasn’t until later that Jin learned he was the Fourth Scroll, during a battle between himself, Wei-Chen, and Sun Wukong. Finally, Chen bid farewell to Jin and went home. But he couldn’t believe that his parents weren’t there. At the end of the season, Princess Iron Fan offered to bring back his parents provided he consented to travel with her.
The second season of American Born Chinese will likely pick up where the first season left off in terms of plot. The creators currently have enough stuff to work with. As a result, it’s likely that we’ll see further adaptations of events from the graphic novel. Daniel also said that season two would focus on Jin’s journey toward obtaining the Fourth Scroll. He continued, saying that the jade pendants and their history would be shown in the following installment.
