Surface Season 1 Review
The plot centers on Sophie, a wealthy San Francisco resident who sustains a severe brain injury while in a boating accident. Everyone around her has told her that her severe memory loss is the result of a suicide attempt. And yet, was it? Sophie is skeptical, so she decides to investigate her past in an effort to clarify what transpired. Everyone in her life, from her sneaky husband James to her loyal best friend Caroline, appears to be hiding something from her.
Despite being marketed as a “sexy, elevated thriller,” after viewing all eight episodes, I can confidently tell that it is neither. The story drags on through eight unnecessary episodes, with the middle ones suffering the most because they have to carry the bulk of a story that required at least half as much time to tell. There’s a lot of unnecessary fluff, and towards the end, when we finally receive the answers we desperately wanted, it’s been 18 minutes already.
Thematically, Surface attempts to build on the question of whether or not our reality is something pre-programmed or something formed by our experiences, but the characters aren’t really endearing, thus the ride isn’t much fun. While James does better than Sophie, the latter never seems to learn from her errors. The dialogue is extremely weak throughout the film.
