It’s a hint that the owner is focusing on important matters rather than showcasing their wealth through material possessions.
Although the status codes in Silicon Valley have always differed slightly from those in other centers of concentrated wealth, the differences have been more noticeable and explicit in recent years. A different set of signals has replaced the obvious affluence that once signified arrival, such as the Porsche, the Patek Philippe, and the extravagant home remodeling, at least among a certain level of tech elite. Performance is the focus of these. metabolic efficiency. cognitive function. performance of productivity. The body and the brain as well-documented optimization issues.
Currently, the most recognizable example is the continuous glucose monitor worn on the upper arm. These are medical gadgets that monitor blood sugar levels in real time throughout the day; they were first created for diabetic patients. People without diabetes are wearing them more frequently in Silicon Valley as part of a larger interest in longevity treatments, metabolic health, and the optimization of nutrition and energy management based on accurate biological data. Putting one on shows how seriously you take your own performance. In a way, it’s also a conversation starter. The owner is identified as someone who is paying that level of attention to their own biology by someone who notices the device and knows what it is.
The vocabulary of AI productivity signaling is unique. This is the tech elite equivalent of a finance person mentioning their Bloomberg terminal settings: discussing which models you’re using for which tasks, mentioning how many tokens you burn through each day, switching between AI systems with practiced fluency, and expressing opinions about their respective strengths for particular use cases. It presents the speaker as someone whose cognitive throughput is so great that they require the strongest means available to control it. The practice of purposefully switching between several AI models instead of choosing just one, known as “ModelMaxxing,” conveys a serious concern for remaining on the cutting edge of available capability.
Persuasive technology is an academic field that occupies an intriguing location next to all of this. The area, which holds its own annual international conference in March at Future University Hakodate in Japan, examines the psychology of human-computer interaction, the ethics of behavior change technology, and how digital systems are made to affect human behavior. It’s a serious field of study that includes nudge design ethics, public health applications, and interface design. The products that Silicon Valley manufactures and distributes on a large scale are directly related to the work being done in this field. It should be noted that it is a different matter entirely whether the manufacturers of those products interact with the scholarly literature.

The biohacking signals, the AI productivity performance, and the anti-luxury car aesthetic are all connected by a consistent underlying message: this person is optimizing for output rather than appearance. Ironically, conveying that message in a very intentional way—wearing the CGM where it is visible, bringing up the token count in normal conversation, and ensuring that others are aware that the car is an option—is a type of appearance management in and of itself. The signal’s content has evolved. Social signaling’s role hasn’t changed.
