Chad Season 1 Review
The TBS sitcom Chad, which follows a painfully awkward Iranian-American kid named Chad as he navigates the challenges of puberty, is about adolescence. The trick is that Nasim Pedrad, the show’s creator and a 39-year-old actress and comedian, plays the boy. With a short wig, many large polo shirts, and a deeper-than-usual speaking tone, the Saturday Night Live alum blends in with the teenage landscape.
Chad has a hilariously ridiculous speech pattern, stumbling over words and phrases and speaking quickly and enthusiastically like a child who is both socially apprehensive and completely exaggerated. Chad has a new obsession in practically every episode, whether it’s K-pop, LeBron James shoes, or a genuine sword he receives as a present. Even after getting his brace removed and making some progress with a gang of cool boys lead by his most continuous object of obsession, Reid (Thomas Barbusca), he remains infantile and nerdy in a way he can’t shake.
Unless one has an extremely high tolerance for the jarring and potentially insulting, it’s unlikely that viewers will leave the first season of Chad rooting for its eponymous character as the impetuous, underdog outcast he’s built up to be. Perhaps there is a valid cause for the kid’s lack of popularity.
